Description

This eWorkshop will provide an introduction into the background, process and interpretation of the Functional Vision Head Impulse Test (fvHIT™). The eWorkshop will cover the background theory behind fvHIT™ and demonstrate step-by-step how to perform the measurement. Normal and abnormal case-studies will be examined to discuss conclusions and the clinical utility of this technique when assessing and training functional deficits in the vestibular ocular reflex.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the background theory and clinical utility behind the Functional Vision Head Impulse Test.
  • Describe how to prepare for and perform the Functional Vision Head Impulse Test.
  • Interpret the results recorded with the Functional Vision Head Impulse Test and discuss their application in vestibular and balance rehabilitation.

Presenter

Darren Whelan
Darren holds an undergraduate degree in audiology and postgraduate master’s degrees in health science, neurophysiology, and clinical research. His resumé includes several clinical positions in the National Health Service (NHS). Prior to his current occupation as an International Clinical Trainer in the Interacoustics Academy, Darren held a clinical audiology and research scientist role in the UK, where he investigated patients with auditory and vestibular pathology, and managed a portfolio of NIHR adopted research studies. He has been a guest speaker at national and international conventions, enjoys teaching and providing clinical insights on the management of patients with dizziness and is a contributing author on published audiological and vestibular articles. Darren has also been an adjunct professor at Salus University in the USA, lecturing on the Doctor of Audiology degree.
Cassandra Anderson PT, DPT
Global Clinical Educator for Balance Rehabilitation, Interacoustics A/S Cassie holds her Doctorate in Physical Therapy and has served as a licensed physical therapist for 11 years. She began her career in the inpatient rehab setting working primarily with patients post stroke then transitioned to the outpatient setting working primarily with the vestibular/balance population in a multidisciplinary ENT and neurology clinics. Cassie has participated in research and quality improvement projects aimed at incorporating technology into clinical practice and has presented at both the national and international level. She also serves on the Digital Communications Committee and the Balance and Falls Special Interest Group within the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy (ANPT) section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
Elizabeth Fuemmeler
Dr. Liz Fuemmeler is a Clinical Product Manager with Interacoustics and Vestibular Program Director at Professional Hearing Center in Kansas City, MO. She graduated with her doctorate in 2019 from Purdue University and received specialty training in vestibular and balance disorders at Boys Town National Research Hospital and the Mayo Clinic. While at Mayo Clinic, she trained in a concussion evaluation and rehabilitation program, which focused on utilizing vestibular testing to identify the presence and extent of issues following a concussion. Utilizing this training, she established a concussion program at a private practice in Kansas City, MO and participated in interdisciplinary evaluations for the Concussion Management Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She is actively involved in vestibular and concussion research and regularly lectures for local, national, and international conferences. Outside of her role with Interacoustics, she co-hosts a monthly podcast called "A Dose of Dizzy'' that reviews current vestibular protocols and research. She also is the past-president of the Missouri Academy of Audiology and volunteers with the American Academy of Audiology.
