Training in Wideband Tympanometry

Foundations & Clinical Applications of Wideband Tympanometry

Intermediate
2+ hours
Course
18 June 2026

Description

Welcome to this course on wideband tympanometry, presented by Dr Gabrielle R. Merchant, AuD., PhD., CCC-A, and Dr Hammam AlMakadma, AuD., PhD., CCC-A, in collaboration with the Interacoustics Academy. The learning objectives for this course are to:

- Understand the foundations of acoustic mechanics involved in wideband tympanometry, its terminology and the differences between wideband tympanometry and single frequency tympanometry
- Be able to identify factors which can introduce variability into the wideband tympanometry measurement and know how to optimize measurement technique for accurate and reliable recordings.
-Explore the clinical applications of wideband tympanometry for both the adult and pediatric population and for a variety of pathologies.

Presenter

Gabrielle Merchant Au.D., Ph.D., CCC-A
Gabrielle R. Merchant, AuD., PhD., CCC-A is an audiologist and hearing scientist and the Director of the Translational Auditory Physiology and Perception Laboratory at Boys Town National Research Hospital. She earned her BA from Smith College (2009), her PhD from the Harvard-MIT Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology Program (2014), and her AuD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2018). Her translational hearing research focuses on auditory mechanics, auditory perception, and advancing evidence-based practice through improved clinical diagnostic tools. Her laboratory has a particular focus on pediatrics, conductive hearing loss, and wideband acoustic immittance. She has been utilizing wideband acoustic immittance and wideband tympanometry in her research since her early undergraduate work with Dr. Susan Voss (2007). She is passionate about research and efforts that will support the translation of these measurements to clinical practice.
Hammam AlMakadma, AuD., PhD., CCC-A
Dr. Hammam AlMakadma is an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders at the University of Louisville (UofL). His area of research is diagnostics and newborn hearing screening, with expertise in measures such as otoacoustic emissions and wideband middle ear measures. Dr. AlMakadma’s research is currently funded by the William Demant Foundation. He is director of the Middle Ear Diagnostic Research Lab at UofL, and the Newborn Hearing Screening Program at University of Louisville Hospital. He also teaches a number of courses for the Doctor of Audiology Program at UofL.
