Identification, assessment and rehabilitation

Vertigo and dizziness are common and are linked to balance disorders which have a number of causes. Dizziness becomes more common in adults as they age, particularly after the age of 40. Prepare your balance clinic to excel at all steps of the path from identification of balance disorders to a complete and accurate assessment. Then deliver the full rehabilitation potential to your patients.
Good balance is not dependent on a single input but is a combination of interactions and signals flowing effectively from our eyes, head and body to our brains which then integrate those inputs and allow us to move freely and safely through our days. If one or more of those inputs is not performing well it will affect our overall balance.

Rotational chairs

The gold standard for a bilateral weakness is rotational chair testing. Rotational chair testing is often better tolerated with difficult to test populations compared to caloric stimulation. Children are a prime example, they are easily tested in the rotary chair.

Rotary chair testing can also be performed on patients with middle ear pathologies for which caloric testing is not possible. Rotary chair testing provides information on compensation of unilateral weaknesses and can be used to monitor vestibular conditions over time.

„The game like nature of the test is intuitive for children. Children love wearing the goggle and using the joystick, makes it more appealing than the bucket test. Very user friendly and easier for children to understand the goal of the test. Overcomes the ability of the bucket to take into consideration head position. A great tool, particularly as the role of SVV in the clinical evaluation is expanding. Excellent tool for behaviorally assessing the impact of vestibular end-organ (utricular) function. May better estimate the functional impact of vestibular end-organ (utricular) function.“

„The Interacoustics Video Frenzel goggles are ideal for vestibular rehabilitation. They are easy to use and provide high quality video. The ability to record video is essential for complex cases, student and patient education. The goggles are comfortable for patients. This system is the best I have used as a clinician specializing in vestibular physical therapy.“

On first arrival of the patient it is good to check that their outer and middle ear is in good health. Information from the tests ensures that you are confident to proceed with further balance testing.

Video Otoscopy

Otoscopy is a fundamental part of your practice prior to any audiological evaluation. It may determine alternative strategies during the patients examination.

Analysing the middle ear with eg. Wideband Tympanometry which is considered one of the biggest revolutions in the industry for decades is an essential part of the pre-examination.

A hearing loss may be a good indication if something is wrong in the outer or inner ear. Hence, performing audiometry is a vital part of the initial examination.
